Finnish lifestyle design house Marimekko will bring their touring Asia-Pacific exhibition, Field of Flowers to The Mills in Hong Kong from 13-22 June. The Mills is a landmark revitalisation project inspired by Hong Kong’s illustrious history as a global textile hub. It aims to integrate art and culture into the community and weave a unique cultural and artistic experience for visitors. This exhibition not only celebrates Marimekko’s debut in Hong Kong, but also symbolises the fusion of contemporary textile print art with Hong Kong’s creative cultural spaces. Visitors are invited to explore the shared heritage, craftsmanship, and cultural significance of both Finland and Hong Kong through a variety of innovative artworks and interactive activities.
25 new artworks illustrate Marimekko’s optimistic and joyful essence
Last year, Marimekko celebrated the 60th anniversary of its most globally recognised Unikko floral print. To sustain the momentum and deepen its design ethos, Marimekko is now presenting an entire bouquet of floral prints in all shapes and sizes under its over-arching worldwide theme for 2025 – The Anatomy of Flowers. Under this theme, it will bring its conceptual pop-up exhibition Field of Flowers to The Mills in Hong Kong. The exhibition features 25 effervescent new floral print designs by five outstanding artists: Erja Hirvi, Masaru Suzuki, Aino-Maija Metsola, Antti Kekki and Eija Vehviläinen.
The floral patterns symbolise unrestrained joy and timeless beauty of the Marimekko brand and served as a source of inspiration for a new generation of designers. Each participating artists has infused their own unique imprint and signature techniques to capture Marimekko’s optimistic and joyful essence and build on Marimekko’s artistic legacy of over 3,500 prints.
The exhibition is tailored specifically for The Mills
Following its debut in Osaka, Japan, this March Field of Flowers has been showcased in Singapore and Bangkok, Thailand over the past few months. Each stop is specifically curated by Marimekko’s headquarters team in Helsinki, Finland, with the exhibition layout redesigned to highlight the unique characteristics of each venue, ensuring the works are presented in their best light. As the host for Hong Kong, The Mills will offer a specially tailored and immersive viewing experience, presenting these vibrant artworks in a fresh and engaging context.
Ms Vanessa Cheung, the Founder of The Mills, said, “The Mills has always been dedicated to fostering a space that nurtures creativity and encourages cultural exchange. Over time, we have actively joined forces with various cultural, artistic, and fashion brands. This partnership with Marimekko highlights our ongoing commitment to promoting intercultural dialogue. Field of Flowers employs fabric as a medium to establish a connection between Hong Kong and Finland, demonstrating the boundless potential of creativity through cross-regional collaboration. Through this initiative, we aim to inspire Hong Kong’s arts and cultural community, ignite creativity in the younger generation, and encourage more local innovation in both design and culture”.
Rebekka Bay, Creative Director at Marimekko, said, “We are excited to work with these five extremely talented print designers and continue our tradition of inviting artists to design five entirely new floral prints that are abstract and conceptual yet literal in essence. The Field of Flowers pop-up exhibition embraces the abundance of different floral subjects, boldly mixing them together, and transforming the space into a joyful bouquet of Marimekko flowers”.
